CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

 

  1. Background of Problem

The condition of major cities such as Jakarta, which has very little water catchment area along with the use of excessive ground water causes a decrease in surface soil and makes difficult to get a good quality of water and sufficient water in the region of Jakarta (http://organisasi.org/).

So, we need the conservation movement around and make jointly by all parties and sustainable. One way / the easiest way to prevent the occurrence of it all are by making a Biopore hole (http://organisasi.org/).

it means holes. So, we can get the conclusion that Biopore is a hole in the ground that is made by so many organism activities inside, such as worm, plant matter, termite and another fauna in the ground. The holes formed will be filled with the air, and will be a place of water passing in the soil (http://www.biopori.com/).

If such holes are made in large number, then, the ability of the soil itself will be increased. Biopore will be able to reduce the danger of flooding that probably happen. An increasing number of biopore can be conducted by creating a vertical hole into the ground and with approximately 1 meter depth. We can make this hole/this method in the home garden (located below the tree), or we can make it around the trench (from interview, November 20, 2010).

Biopore filled by the organic materials, which the organic material will be used as a source of energy for all of the organisms in the soil, so their activity will be more increased. (http://www.biopori.com/). Besides to overcome the flood problems, this water absorption holes can also form or make compost. By using this method, we can also resolve the problem about Global Warming, because this method is environmentally friendly (interview20 November 2010). And all about “How to Make a Simple Method of Biopore to Avoid Flood Problem” will be described completely in the next chapter.

Based on the Background of Problem above, we can find so many problems that appear, such as:

  1. Who is the first that discovered the Biopore holes method?
    1. Is it difficult or complicated to make a biopore and how much funds to make it?
      1. What are the benefits of Biopore absorption hole besides preventing the flood?
      2. Will the Biopore  be working if it is made only by one hole?
      3. How to make a Biopore properly and correctly?
      4. What kind of stuff that we need to make a biopore ?
      5. How does the biopore works?
      6. Limitation of Problem

Based on the background of Problem and Identification of the problems that has mentioned above, we can limit these problems as follows:

  1. The benefits of Biopore in overcoming the problems that exists in surrounding environment,
  2. How to make a Biopore properly and correctly?
  3. And how does the biopore work?
  4. Formulation of Problem

Based on Background, Identification, and limitation of the problem above, we can formulate the problem as below:

  1. What are the benefits of Biopore in overcoming the problems that exist in the surrounding environment besides avoid the flood?
  2. How to make a Biopore properly and correctly?
  3. How does the process / how does the biopore work?
  4. The Objectives of Research

The objectives of this research are:

  1. To know what are the functions and benefits of Biopore in overcoming the problems that exist in the surrounding environment,
  2. To find out about how to make a biopore absorption hole in proper and good manner
  3. And to know how the biopore is working out.
  4. The Benefits of Research

The benefits of this Research are:

  1. We can know about the benefits and usefulness from Biopore absorption hole   in overcoming or prevent the problems that exist in the surrounding environment
  2. We also know about how the work processes of Biopore hole and the process to make a Biopore hole too.
  3. And can tell the society that who wants to know more about what is the Biopore and also to tell how to make it.

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

A. Theoretical Assessment

a.1. Biopore Definition

These are the opinions by the specialist in agriculture sector, especially for Biopore absorption holes and from the several articles on electronic media:

Biopore is a small hole or tunnel that located in the soil. “Biopore created by the development and animals that live in the soil.” Ir. Kamir R. Brata, M. Sc, explained. He is one of the researchers from Bogor Agriculture Institute, and also the inventor of this Biopore method.

The meaning and definition of the Biopore hole according to organisasi.org is a hole with a diameter of 10 cm to 30 cm and length of 30 cm to 100 cm that covered with the organic waste that functioning to trap the water that flows around it, so it can be a source of water supply for the underground water, the surrounding plants, and can also help weathering the organic waste into compost that can be used for fertilizer plants.

a.2. Flood Definition

The statement below is a definition of the flood according to the one of most trusted source on electronic media:

Flood is an incident of the closing mainland by the water. The flood incident occurs if the water stagnant the land that is usually dry. Flood are generally caused by water river that overflows into the surrounding environment as a result from the high rainfall.

a.3. Biopore as a Method to Overcome the Flood

When the rainy season comes, the volume of water will be increased. Then, come a new innovation about environmentally friendly technology to solve flood problem. The technology is known as Biopori. This technology using a hole absorption in the ground to accommodate the water. The Biopore hole made by so many organism activities inside, such as a worm, plant matter, termite and another fauna in the ground. The holes will be filled with the air, and will be a place of water passing in the soil (http://www.biopori.com/Banjir).

 

  1. Hypothesis

Based on the Theoretical Framework, we can get the information or conclusion about biopore :

  • If we use the Biopore method, we might be able not affected by the flood disaster.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY OF RESEARCH

 

3.1  Methodology of Research

The methodology that is used in this research is a descriptive method to examine and describe an object which is Biopore, and also this research using the Action Research method.

3.2  Population and Sample

3.1.1.            Population of The Research

The population from this Research are, all of the Biopore at Pasir Mukti, Citeureup, Bogor.

3.1.2.            Sample of The Research

The sample from this Research is a Biopore that is used while the experiments at Pasir Mukti, Citeureup, Bogor.

3.3  The Data Collection

The data collection using the Observation and Interview Technique

3.3.1. Observation

An observation was done to get a direct picture of what Biopore and to know how to make Biopore.

3.3.2. Interview

Interviews were conducted to ask some information directly from those already experts in his sector, for example the Tour Guide that leads us to get around and when at the end, we can ask everything about plant to that person and finally we can learn and know about various plants, especially for Biopore as well.

3.4.            Place And Time of the Research

CHAPTER IV

DISCUSSION

 

  1. The Discussion of The Research

 

Biopore Absorption Hole is not a garbage can, even though filled with the organic waste, but the function is more as draw well absorption, and it is the solution to fix the soil chemical and it also to prevent if there is a flood disaster.

As mentioned before, make a Biopore hole is not complicated and only need the organic material or the organic waste. This method is very useful to overcome the flood, because the soil can be permeating the volume of water in large amounts.

The Equipments and Ingredients to Make a Biopore Hole

The Equipments to make a biopore is called biopore drill, and the explanation of its parts will be described as follows:

  • Top: Handlebar. The function of this section is to control (to twist) a biopore drill
  • Center / Body: Stem. This section is not longer than 1 meter
  • Bottom: Drill Eye. The function of this section is a puller to the soil that have been unearthed

  • Organic Stuff

How to Make a Biopore

  1. Make a cylindrical hole in the ground with a diameter 10 until 30 centimeters and 30 – 100 centimeters depth and the distance of each hole 50 until 100 centimeters.
  2. The mouth of the hole can be reinforced with the cement thickness 2 centimeters and 2 until 3 centimeters wide and give it a safety limit, so there’s no children or people who fall into this hole
  3. Fill the hole with the organic waste such as a leaves, kitchen waste, branches, the kitchen waste with no chemical elements, etc. And then, the trash in the hole will be shrinked, so we need to fill it again, and at the end of dry season, it can be drained as natural compost.
  4. The amount of biopore existing, it supposed to be calculated based on the rain intensity, then the water absorption and the areas which is not absorbed the water well it counted by a formula = rain intensity (mm/hour) x broad areas of water-resistant (square meters) / water infiltration rate per-holes (liters/hour).

The Good Places Where We Make the Biopore

  • At the base of rainwater around the home, office, school, etc.
  • Around the tree
  • In the empty land between the plant and plant boundary

How to Determine the Amount of Biopore Hole that Needed:

The amount of biopore exists, it is supposed to be calculated based on the rain intensity, then the water absorption and the areas which does not absorb the water well it counted by a formula = rain intensity (mm/hour) x broad areas of water-resistant (square meters) / water infiltration rate per-holes (liters/hour).

Biopore hole can survive from one until two months if the holes are not filled again with another ground. In addition, Biopore not only overcome the flood disaster but also make natural compost. This method is very environmentally friendly.

  1. Result and Important Discoveries of the Research

Besides to reduce the flood risk in the rainy season, this hole also has other functions or benefits, such as:

  1. Maximize the water that seep into the ground so water in the soil added.
  2. Make the natural compost from organic waste rather than burn it.
  3. Reduce the puddle of water that causes the disease.
  4. Reduce the water that discarded useless to the sea.
  5. Maximize the role and the activities of flora and fauna in the ground.
    1. Prevent the ground erosion and the landslide disaster.

The Strength and the Weaknesses of Biopori :

  • Strengths :
    • Make the ground becomes crumbly,
    • Make the ground has so much water,
    • Make the ground into pivot.
    • Weaknesses :

Biopore is 1 meter deep that is covered by the organic ingredients such as the grass, to avoid someone fall into it.

In the Region’s Capital Jakarta is already using this biopore method, but this method does not completely work / it takes less effective because the hole was covered by the iron concrete, so the biopore in Jakarta are cannot to work properly.

In addition, there’s still the lack of awareness and caring from the community to the surrounding environment, such as the littering, which now accumulate and eventually cause the overflow of water that what we usually call with flood.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

CHAPTER V

CLOSING

  1. A. Conclusion

The fact, Biopore is the one of a simple method that can prevent the flood disaster. The word of Biopore comes from Latin (Bio and Pori). Bio, it means life and Pori means holes. So, we can get the conclusion that Biopore is a hole in the ground that made by so many organism activities inside, such as a worm, plant matter, termite and another fauna in the ground. The holes are formed will be filled with the air, and will be a place of water passing in the soil. Ir. Kamir R. Brata, M.Sc, was found this method and finally, this method and when in the end give some inspiration to the other community to make the same things.

Biopore also has many benefits besides overcoming the flood, like maximize of water that seep into the ground so that adds the soil water, make the natural compost from organic waste rather than burning it, reduce the puddle of water that caused the disease, reduce the water that discarded very useless to the sea, maximize the role and the activities of flora and fauna in the ground, and prevent the ground erosion and the landslide disaster.

Biopore is a reliable method for overcome the flood. However, somehow this matter back to its own public awareness, particularly for the capital region of Jakarta that is often affected by flood.

 

  1. B. Implication
  • It would be proved if the manufacture of Biopore done in the best possible (follow the ways that have been taught), so the hole will work (absorb the water) well too.
  • Will be realized if we make Biopore hole in large amount, it will minimize the chance of the water overflow that excessive.
  • It would be proved that the holes of Biopore is very useful for the environment if the treatment is done in correctly and properly, because the treatment of these holes is the most important thing as well.

 

  1. C. Suggestion
  • We recommend that the manufacture of biopore should improve / expanded more, so there is no excessive water that overflows in the environment.
  • Everybody should make a biopore in their house, because it is very useful in absorb the water in a large number, so there is no water overflow / flood around the house.
  • The government should give a provided information to the public for making a biopore hole around the schools, offices, houses, or in the yard, especially for The Region area such as Jakarta where common get flood, as form the awareness of community to the surrounding environment.

Full name Atikah Rahmadina (Dina), was born in Jakarta (04th June 1996), the second daughter from couple Ir. Achmad Rudy Djauhanis (47 years Old), and Mrs. Holaw Warnani (44 Years Old), have two sisters, older sister name is Rachmania Wanodyatama (16 years old), and younger sister name is Putri Jagadhita Anjanis (08 Years Old). Study in 9th Grade of PB. Soedirman IIJHS. And now in processed to be graduated from PB. Soedirman IIJHS and preparing herself for the National Examination and also Final School Test.

When the writer was children, she lives in Pondok Gede - Bekasi, but when 5th years old, she and her family moved to kranggan, jatisampurna – bekasi. And she was school in Al- Ishmah kindergarten school. And then, she grew up and she was school in Fajar Hidayah Elementary School (for 6 years, grade 1 until grade 6). She has been graduated in 2008, and got score 25,10 (8 for each subject). Then she went to Junior High school and she accepted in IIJHS on July, 2008. And now she is in 9th grade and preparing for the National Exam and another exam.
