Chapter I

  1. Background of Study

Orchid is a one of the flowers which has a lot of fans. There are various of orchids, from colors, shape, size, and motive. The conducive climate in Indonesia make us able to plan orchids. It is proved that there are a lot of various of orchids from Indonesia. But planting the orchids is not as easy as we think. (Agar anggrek rajin berbunga karya Dyah Widiastoety Darmono, 2003)

Caring the orchids is one of the cultivating step. Without any good caring, the orchids will not grow well. In this case, we need some steps to take care of the orchids, such as the right field to grow, spraying, fertilizing , media changing, etc.

Orchid is a general name for all family planting Orchidaceae ( family of orchid ). There are approximately 15.000-20.000 species of orchids with 900 genus in the world which grow in forest spreading in 750 countries. More or less 5000 species of them spread in Indonesia. In short, orchids are classified as 5 sub family, 16 tribes, and 28 sub tribes.

(Merawat Anggrek karya Ir. Yos Sutiyoso dan B. Sarwono).

B.        Identification of the Problem

Based on the background of study above, we will find some problems about ‘”The Cultivating of Orchid” as follow:

  • What are the type of orchids?
  • What should we do if we want to plant orchids?
  • Where do the orchid grow?
  • How do the orchid grow / adapt?
  • How long do the orchids grow until becoming grown flowers?

C.    The Limitation of the Problem

Based on the problems above, we can conclude that:

“ Explain about the parts of orchids “ and

“ How to plant, care, and cultivate orchid in the potting soil media?“

D.   The Formulation of the Problem

The formulation of the problems are :

1. by analyzing the problem, the writer find some advantages, that is knowing more about the kinds of orchids and how to cultivate them especially in potting soil media,

2. the topic is very interesting for the writer to discuss,

3. in making this report the writer doesn’t find any difficulties.

Chapter II

A. Theoretical Framework

A.1. Orchid

Preciously people thought that orchid was a flower which only has purple color. However, nowadays we can find orchids with various shapes, colors, and

size. Every year, hundreds of new hybrids have been registered and published in Sanders’ List Orchid Hybrids. (budi daya Anggrek,2002)

Orchid can be classified in 2 groups, such as monopodial and sympodial. Monopodial orchids are : Phalaenopsis, Renanthera, and Vanda. Sympodial orchids are : Oncidium, Dendrobium, Coelogyne, and Cattelya.

Orchid (Orchidaceae) is a flower and one of the tribe of flowering plant which has a lot of types. There are so many orchids in the world (15.000-20.000 species). They are spreading widely from wet tropical place to circumpolar area, though some of the type found in tropical area.

Orchid can be found in all of the world except in Antartic and desert. Mostly this plant is a life as epiphyte (by living on other plant without disturbing it because orchid is an independent plant).

Orchid that live in temperature climates usually live in soil (Vanda, Arachnis, and Aranda) and to form tuber as a way to adapt during the winter. Epiphytic orchids can live from moisture and humid air. The organs tend to be thick and “fleshy” (succulent) to make it survive the pressure of water availability.

Orchids have the part, namely:

A.1.a. Flowers:

Like the other flowers, orchid consist of 5 important part there is Sepals (petals), flower crown, stamen, pistil, and ovaries. Orchid has 3 pieces of beautifully colored sepals, which unlike other flower sepals are usually green. Location to form a triangle. But in certain types such as the Slipper Orchid, which is under the sepals linked into one.

Except sepals, orchid has 3 pieces of petals which also form a triangle position. 2 pieces which is above the 120 degree and one other piece which is the lip or the lowest part of the three petals that form the corolla of an orchid, usually bigger than the other two petals and often spurred and is called labelum or lip.with the she and called labelum or lip.

A.1.b. Fruit:

Orchid’s fruit is a capsular fruit that split in six. The seeds contained in fruits and many. Orchid have no endosperm (food reserves) like any other crop seed.

A.1.c. Leaf:

The shapes of the orchid leaf’s varies , from the narrow elongated     until a long round. As in general, monocot plants, orchid leaves don’t have a bone like the spread nets, but the rib of leaf parallel to the strands of leaves.

A.1.d. Stem:

There is a orchid’s stem that single by the end of the stem grows straight without limitation. After leaf fall, stem looks like a dead.

A.1.e. Root:

Orchid’s root has a spongy layer that is velamen (hollow) and underneath there is a layer containing chlorophyll. the function of this velamen layer is to absorb water and protect the inside of the roots.

A.2. Dendrobium Orchid

Dendrobium very enthused by the community, because it produces beautiful flowers and attractive color. Besides that, it is not easy to fall off the flower crown, compared with other orchid species.

Dendrobium orchids are kospolitan (can be found from the tropics to the sub-tropics). Spread of this orchid from the coast to the mountains and snow, which spread from India, SriLanka, southern China, Japan southward to southeast Asia to the Pasific region. Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea. (Hawkes, 1965; Gunadi, 1979; Rentoul, 1982).

Dendrobium orchid way of life is attached to other objects such as trees, fern slabs, there are several types of rocks on the slopes of the mountain, and there is also a growing climbing on the stems of other plants without harming the place attached ( are epiphytes). Whereas the growth pattern sympodial.

Dendrobium orchids use than can be used as cut flowers for the circuit, can also be used as flower pots and flower gardens for the production landscape

A.3. Growing Media/Growing Orchids

So many media that can be used for the growing places for orchids, that is:

  1. Broken bricks,

2. Broken tiles

3. Styrofoam,

4. Moss,

5. Pieces of coconut fiber,

6. Charcoal,

7. Sphagnum,

8. Coco fiber.

9. Fern.

Except that, the equipment for planting orchid is pot. Pot or container for planting orchids are various. Conventionally used in potting soil, but plastic pots or wooden boxes also frequently used. ( budi daya Anggrek,2002)

A.3.a. Potting Soil

Potting soil is a material that can accommodate a media for orchids such as wood charcoal, coconut fiber, and ferns, which generally have high porosity, so that the media is not too wet which caused rapid death of orchids and orchid roots can also be made rapidly progressing well. Besides that it has a lot of potting soil pores in the walls, so there is much going evaporation and temperature around the roots of the orchid plants grown in potting soil lower than those planted in plastic pots, so it is suitable for growing orchids. (budidaya anggrek,2002)

A.4. Cultivation of Orchids in Potting Soil

Orchids grow on various media, one of them is the potting soil. Serves to accommodate pots of orchids growing media. pores contained in these pots may cause evaporation that are good for growing orchids. Because the potting soil is suitable to make orchids can grow well and good.

A.5. Hypothesis

On the description above, can be made provisional estimates, namely: “More better the planting media/growing media for orchids, the development of orchids will be better”.
